NatureWorks LLC has come up with two new biopolymers for fibers and nonwovens.

The Minnetonka, Minn., company says the new grades exhibit lower shrinkage, faster crystallization and higher melting points. They expand the possibilities for Ingeo resins in personal care and hygiene, filtration media, medical fabrics, civil engineering fabrics, geotextiles and agricultural fabrics.

Ingeo 6100D is a mid-viscosity grade for spunbond nonwovens and conventional staple filament melt spinning applications. Ingeo 6260D is a low-viscosity product for melt-blown nonwovens.

NatureWorks claims reduced shrinkage of the new fiber grades improves dimensional stability. They are more resistant to hydrolysis and have 30 percent higher stiffness above their glass transition temperature. Both have higher heat-set temperatures. Their higher melting points lead to opportunities for two-component systems with low melting point Ingeo resins.

Ingeo is a line of polylactides and other biopolymers derived from renewable resources.
